Clearing and creating a Wildlife Pond and Wildflower meadow, April 2021.

Clearing and creating a Wildlife Pond and Wildflower meadow, April 2021.

Location: Nailstone, Warwickshire
Duration: a total 1 week

Upon Arrival, LDW Group began to pump the old pond out ready to infill with soil and topsoil so the space can become a new flower bed. We then moved on to the overgrown gated area of land that we were asked to transform into a wildflower meadow and pond.

We began by clearing the weeds and brambles from the area to reveal the top soil. We then removed the top soil and placed this to one side to be used later. We then marked out the pond using line painting spray and began to excavate. We created a shelf around the edge of the pond, and a shallow area for the fish to be able to sit higher on warmer days. Once the pond shape was excavated, we covered the excavated area in sand to give a soft ground finish and then began to lay the underlay. Once the underlay was in, we placed the liner and began to fill the pond, stretching, folding and pulling the liner to ensure a neat finish. Once the pond had completed filling, we buried the pond liner edging with soil and topped the area with stones surrounding the pond. We used the spoil from the pond to create a bund behind the pond as a backdrop, and a seating area in the opposite corner using wood chippings and excess stones that were already on site, giving these items a new purpose.

The engcon tilt-rotator was extremely helpful when shaping the pond, it allowed us to create neat, sharp edges and irregular shapes without needing to track around.

I had an area of land which was covered in docks, weeds and brambles and I had long wondered what to do with it. I came up with the idea of creating a wildflower meadow and wildlife pond. Luke and Jade came recommended by some tree surgeons that had done work for me. They spent time assessing the area and advising on what would need doing and how big they thought the pond should be. They started work by taking off all the top layer of rubbish and working it in under the hedges in my field. We then laid out a shaped pond and they began excavating it. The valuable top soil was put to one side .I wanted to fill in an old dead pond in the garden area, they pumped that out and filled it with the spoil then a layer of topsoil on the top. I intend extending my rose garden in this area.

Once the pond was dug out, with shelves all round for plants and a shallower area at the back for when fish are added, they lined it with sand, on top of that a layer of material then the pond liner which was top quality. They spent a lot of time getting this right due to the shaping of the pond. While it was filling with water which took a couple of days or so they busied themselves with clearing old brambles from round the outside of the fencing and mending it in places, then they laid stones round the perimeter of the pond. None of these jobs had been scheduled but they took pride in the finished look. The wildflower area was covered with the topsoil and a bund built at the back of the pond and all seeded. I had ideas about having a seating area in a corner of the plot and they set about using the pieces of liner that were over, covered it with chippings left from the tree surgeons work and laid remainder of stones round the edge. Again work that had not been scheduled but they seemed to enjoy getting it right.

As I write this review the meadow is starting to green up and already waterboatmen are swimming in the pond, so I have an ongoing project which I look forward to working on.

They took pride in their work, arrived early in the morning and worked only taking short breaks, when I insisted they have a drink, and worked on into the late afternoon. Nothing was too much trouble and the finished area is exactly what I wanted and more. I would recommend these young people unreservedly.
